Welcome from Kenya

Kenya is a located in East Africa, on the coast of the Indian Ocean. It has a population of over 47 million people, and is one of the most diverse countries in Africa. It is home to many different ethnic and religious groups, including the Kikuyu, Luhya, Kamba, Luo, and Maasai people. Kenya is known for its wildlife and national parks, including the Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. The country has a vibrant economy, and is a major exporter of coffee, tea, and flowers. It is also a popular tourist destination, with its beautiful beaches, cultural heritage, and safaris.

Our trip to Kenya consisted of a 10-day safari, followed by 4 days at a coastal beach resort.

During our safari we stayed in three conservancies. These are private game parks that are managed by non-profit organisations, funded by tourism and eco-conscious investors. They are focussed on animal conservation and support their local communities with health services, schools and jobs. By limiting the number of camps and tourists, the conservancies provide the best safari experience for their visitors. This also allows the vehicles to go off road and get very close to the animals, which is not allowed in the main Masai Mara National Reserve.

Getting Around

After arriving from London we spent a night in Nairobi and next morning went to Wilson Airport, Kenya’s largest regional airport.

Boarding for our first adventure; a Cessna Caravan, 12 seater aircraft.

Kamok Bush Airstrip – Challenging Landings; a man on a motorbike on hand to move any animals off the runway!

The main mode of transport for airport transfers and game drives was the ubiquitous Toyota Land Cruiser, converted to carry four people in relative comfort. They provided an excellent platform for game viewing and allowed us to get very near the animals, which mostly ignored our presence. We were lucky to have a guide and vehicle to ourselves for the entire safari.

Note; the building in the background was the toilet block – the only structure at the airstrip!
